SCHOOL COMMANDS COACH TO STOP PRAYING WITH TEAM

'Talks with students may not include religious expression'

Thou shall not pray with willing participants of a high-school football team.

A Bremerton, Washington, assistant high-school football coach has been commanded by district officials not to pray or engage in any religious conversations with his team.

Thursday’s decision was made after Bremerton High School assistant coach Joe Kennedy received national attention for praying at the 50-yard line with students after each game. Supporters feared Kennedy would lose his job.

Superintendent Aaron Leavell wrote a letter Sept. 17 saying all conversations with students “must remain entirely secular in nature, so as to avoid alienation of any team member and, importantly, violate the law and our board policy,” King 5 News reported.

Leavell expanded on the district’s decision in a statement released to the Daily Caller.

“Our coaching staff can continue to provide motivational, inspirational talks to students before, during and after games and other team activity, focusing on appropriate themes such as unity, teamwork, responsibility, safety and endeavor. However, talks with students may not include religious expression, including prayer. They must remain entirely secular in nature, so as to avoid alienation of any team member and, importantly, violate the law and our board policy,” the Daily Caller reported.

The superintendent also said the district could lose funding if it violated federal laws.

Paul Marshall, Lela Gilbert and Nina Shea have collaborated to create “Persecuted: The Global Assault on Christians,” which confirms that groups like Pew Research, Newsweek and The Economist also identify Christians as “the world’s most widely persecuted religious group.”

“I would only have a problem with it if students were being excluded or bullied for not participating in the prayer,” a student told King 5 News.

“It’s freedom of religion, not freedom from religion,” said another fan at a Bremerton High School game, the network reported.
