They Abandoned Me - Ken Ebright
"I will never leave you; I will never abandon you." Deuteronomy 31:6
On a fall day in 1979, my mom got into the car and pulled out of the driveway. The next day, I found her car at a bridge. They found her remains in the Minnesota River about a week later. She had been a recovering alcoholic at the time. In her suicide note, she felt she had not been a good mother.
My dad remarried for the third time the following year. In the mid to late nineties, my dad divorced my stepmother. He did what he had done every time he'd had trouble in a relationship. He got in the car and left town. I tried to write him, but he never wrote me back. All I had was a P.O. Box number with no street address.
It's ironic that both my parents got into the car and left. I felt abandoned, as if they left me on the street to fend for myself. I am so grateful that I don't have to worry about my heavenly father pulling out of the driveway and forsaking me. He has promised that in spite of the good or bad circumstances in my life, he will always be there. I just need to trust Him.
