My Walking Companion
Sheriena McEvers
“… Truly our fellowship is with the Father and with His Son Jesus Christ. And these things we write to you that your joy may be full.” (1 John 1:3b-4 NKJV)
My friends and family know I walk on a regular basis.
But, do they know why I walk?
It used to be for exercise — you know; the fast walk.
I still get some exercise, but that purpose has become secondary.
I really don’t walk fast enough to burn many calories. It is more like a stroll, and I tend to pause every once in a while as I focus on a thought, or I take time to listen.
More importantly, I don’t walk alone.
I used to, but over the past few years, I’ve had a companion.
At first it was a brief encounter, but over time that companion stayed longer and longer, until now He’s with me the whole walk.
Let me state the truth of the matter.
It wasn’t so much that He stayed longer, but that rather I began to sense His presence more and more. I came to realize He was with me throughout the walk.
I’ve grown so attached to Him that He’s become the reason for my walk.
And there are frequent pauses as the communication between us becomes focused.
He speaks and I listen or I speak and He listens.
To experience this close connection with the great Uncreated One is better than anything in the world.
Occasionally, as life happens, I will miss a day.
I know He is always with me, but when it happens that focused encounter with my Creator is deeply missed.
Kind Father, as we tend to our lives, may we always be aware of You waiting for us, waiting to share Your thoughts with us, and waiting to hear our thoughts. Amen.
