Hear! Hear!

“Everyone should be quick to hear….” James 1:19 NAB
Jesus demonstrated the importance of hearing numerous times by healing the deafness of many, though the only recorded account is found in Mark 7.
When he healed the deaf-mute man, Jesus opened a new world to him, thus enabling him to hear His voice. This man was now able to hear the living “Word of God” and be transformed both physically and spiritually by this miraculous encounter.
But Jesus wanted this miracle to be hushed, not wanting to be known as a healer or another “magician of sorts.”
What He wanted people to hear was the message of His Father’s love—the gospel message of John 3:16. He wanted us to know Him and be able to proclaim in our own hearts, like Peter,
“You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.” (Matthew 16:16)
Of necessity, we must be able to hear in order to know.
Paul says we should be quick to hear!
Don’t put off really hearing the Truth.
“The sheep hear His voice, as He calls His own sheep by name, and leads them out.” (John 10:3)
He knows your name—listen for His voice because He will lead you.
“He summoned the crowd and said to them, hear and understand.” (Matthew 15:10)
Jesus requested two actions of the people, inseparable, to hear and to understand.
“Keep on doing what you have learned and received and heard and seen in me. Then the God of peace will be with you.” (Philippians 4:9)
Once we hear and understand, we are admonished to do what we have heard and received from the Lord.
Lord, touch my ears and heal any spiritual deafness in me. May I be quick to hear Your Voice and understand. Lead me, O Lord, that I may boldly go forth and do Your will. Amen.
