His Witness

“There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. He came as a witness to testify to the light, so that all might believe through him.” John 1:6-7 (NRSV)
There was a man sent from God, whose name was John.
And today there is a people sent by God, who are called His disciples.
Sent to their families, into their communities and among their work places.
We are sent to be a witness.
This is our vocation.
Like John, we merely tell others what we know of Jesus.
We testify to His life.
The life that brings light to all people.
The life that enlightens all people.
And because we believe the life of Jesus is the light to all people, we are compelled to share His life with others.
We know that everyone, everywhere needs the light of Christ, and we long for everyone to fully know and experience Jesus’ life.
As His witness, we don’t need to succeed.
Nothing depends on us.
Others will believe not because of what we do or don’t say, but through the work Jesus does in another.
We simply testify to His work in us.
We can abandon self-importance and adopt a posture of humility.
We are not the light and can win no man to Christ.
Christ alone wins souls for Himself.
Can a chisel or hammer take the credit for the completion of a finely crafted table or chair?
In the same way, the glory goes not to the witness, but to God who works through His disciples to see a soul saved.
We are but mere tools in the Master’s hand used to be His witness.
