Character of the Redeemed
Jennifer Woodley
“Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” 1 Thessalonians 5: 16-18 (NRSV)
It’s almost impossible to read these three verses without seeing them flow together to form one single idea.
We are to be rejoicing people who pray to the Father and give thanks to Him despite whatever circumstances we encounter.
Rejoicing, prayerfulness and thanksgiving are the essence of the Christian life.
Rejoicing, prayerfulness and thanksgiving are the essence of the Christian life.
The reason we can adopt this stance is clear. Romans 8:28 says,
“We know that all things work together for good, for those who love God, who are called according to His purpose.”
We rejoice, give thanks and remain prayerful knowing that God is causing the bad stuff to work out for our good and in a way that will draw attention to His grace in our lives.
A Spirit-filled believer’s life is full of joy, thanks and prayer.
A Spirit-filled believer’s life is full of joy, thanks and prayer.
It gushes out of them. That is the character of our life.
The litmus test of a redeemed heart.
Are we joyful even in trials, prayerful without ceasing, giving thanks in all circumstances?
This is God’s desire for His people.
However, if our hearts are full of doubt regarding the character of God and His promises;
if we are selfish wanting our way and not God's;
if our lives are crammed full of worldly possessions and pleasures;
if we harbour a critical spirit or are apathetic towards spiritual things, neglecting God and His word, we will not be a rejoicing, thankful or prayerful people.
And anything other than this is sin.
Let’s continue to yield to Christ and purpose to be the people He desires.
