Stuck in Our Sin – Cheryl Weber
Driving by a small farm one day, I thought I saw something that made me turn my car around.
I parked and walked back to investigate.
My eyes had not deceived me.
A goat, obviously lusting after the “greener” grass on the other side of his fence, had forced his head through one of the squares formed by the heavy wires.
He was thoroughly stuck.
His horns, which were several inches long, added to his difficulty.
After some careful manipulation, I managed to set him loose and he trotted away, hopefully wiser for his ordeal.
We can get ourselves trapped spiritually and morally just like that goat.
We lust after the “greener” grass of sin outside the fence of God’s loving and wise laws, laws intended for our good.
Even though his word warns us that disobedience will only cause trouble and heartache, we are determined to have our own way.
We force ourselves through the protective barriers of godliness and instead of pleasure, we find ourselves stuck and helpless.
But Jesus Christ, God’s son, sees our plight and takes pity on us.
By his own death for our sins and by his resurrection, he is able to come to our aid and loose us from the power of sin and death, extending to us his offer of salvation and eternal life.
All we need to do is turn away from our rebellion and accept that offer.
And then, as Romans 8:2 says, the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus will set us free from the law of sin and death.
We become righteous through Christ and receive a new heart and nature, at liberty to do what is right and no longer stuck in our sin.
PRAYER: Lord Jesus, thank you that you died for me so that I could be set free from my sins and receive new life in you. AMEN.
