A Horrible Weekend
Ken Ebright
"Control yourselves and be careful! The devil, your enemy, goes around like a roaring lion looking for someone to eat 1 Peter 5:8." (NCV)
At the same time, I wrote this devotion; I was taking a home study seminary course.
I needed help with something, so I emailed the instructor.
After two weeks of not hearing, a roaring lion tried to devour me.
The Lord knew I was thinking of giving up on my seminary classes.
First, He used my Friday morning devotion to communicate with me.
It was about a girl who was happy because she persevered and finished the race.
While it gave me some peace, I still felt attacked throughout the day as I prayed and did my best to heed the Lord's message to persevere.
On Saturday, God used my men's Bible study to help me.
The devotion told us to look back at our life and remember how Jesus has helped us through difficult times.
When I did, I realized that He has always been there for me, especially when I am sensitive to His voice that always agrees with scripture and often comes through others.
Despite God's help to that point, I had let the enemy have a foothold in my thoughts and still felt uneasy.
I had learned before not to let pride keep me from reaching out and decided to call a Christian hotline.
Amazingly, the counselor reiterated God's message on perseverance, saying sometimes you have to keep pushing the big stone, even though it is not going anywhere.
On Sunday morning, the pastor's sermon was on spiritual warfare, and I went up and asked for prayer after the service.
On Monday morning, praise the Lord, I received an email with my questions answered.
It was a difficult weekend, much of it self-induced, created by fear, wrong thinking and worry, but the Lord was still there with me.
Like always, He used it for my good, teaching me about spiritual warfare, humility, and how to use the different pieces of His armor.
Have you been persevering and putting on God's armor daily?
