Rough Edges
HL Ford
I watched an older man gather some large stones with his aged and gnarled hands.
He carefully stacked them atop one another, building a wall.
The rocks were uncut and rough looking and I pondered if the structure was to become a building of some sort.
Although the stones were multi-colored, I wondered if the result would be pleasing with all of the rough, bumpy, and sharp edges jutting out from each rock.
In contrast, the immense stones in Egypt's pyramids are cut and fit together so precisely that no modern architect can duplicate the process.
It is said that even a sheet of paper cannot be inserted between the gigantic rocks.
The verse comes to mind from 1 Peter 2:5:
you yourselves like living stones are being built up as a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. (ESV)
Think about how God takes each one of us and carefully arranges us by design to fit together. What an amazing thought!
In order to create a smooth wall, stones must be cut, trimmed and planed.
No rough, jutting edges will do for God's temple.
This cutting away of the rough edges, well, you can see where I'm going with that thought.
Here I am, Father, a living stone, longing to be made fit for Your Temple.
Smooth out my edges and re-create me.
I cannot do it in my own strength.
And while You're at it, could You fit me in with a few stones whose edges are already smooth?
That would be so much more comfortable.
