Scientists Discover a Very Different Reason Why Antarctica is Melting
The theory of manmade climate change is often touted as settled science by those on the left, and people who are critical of it or even question it are sometimes called “climate deniers,” akin to those who deny the Holocaust. But the reality is, scientists are still making massive discoveries on how the earth actually works and realizing that they don’t know as much as they thought they knew about God’s creation.
Earlier this year, Time wrote about a new scientific discovery that suggested that manmade global warming was melting Antarctica’s ice sheets at a much faster rate than anyone had thought. The appearance of new lakes and streams on the frozen southern continent drew concerns that the melting ice shelves covering the land mass underneath could crack and ultimately collapse.
Time warned of rapidly rising sea levels as a result. In fact, sea levels were predicted to rise over three-and-a-half feet by the end of the century.
On Wednesday, though, USA Today wrote a story about how scientists are now saying that a 1,800-degree mantle plume or scorching rock is sitting under a portion of West Antarctica. It’s so big that it’s producing an intense level of heat similar to that of the Yellowstone supervolcano.
What effect does all that heat have on the ice shelfs? Frankly, scientists are surprised the ice still exists.
"I didn't see how we could have that amount of heat and still have ice on top of it," said Helene Seroussi of NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory.
