Michigan man 'passed' vetting process, granted citizenship despite terror ties

A Dearborn man who emigrated to the U.S. from Lebanon as a teenager pleaded guilty Monday to lying about his plans to travel back to his homeland and fight for the Shiite terrorist group Hezbollah.

In fact, the evidence now suggests Mohammad Hassan Hamdan may have been a terrorist before he ever came to America and settled in Michigan at the age of 15.

The implications of Hamdan’s admission at a time when the U.S. government is bringing in tens of thousands of supposedly highly screened refugees from jihadist hotbeds in Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan and Somalia are huge.

Hamdan, now 24, admitted he initially lied in March 2014 when he told federal agents he was going to Lebanon to “get his teeth fixed,” according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, the Detroit News reported.

Hamdan was arrested just before he was ready to board a flight on Sunday, March 16, 2014, at Detroit Metropolitan Airport.

On Monday, he admitted telling an FBI confidential source that he was going to Lebanon to join Hezbollah and fight in Syria, according to prosecutors. As a Shiite, he planned to fight on behalf of the Syrian regime of Bashar Assad, who is Shiite, defending it against the Sunni rebels that include the Islamic State, al-Nusra Front and other factions, the Arab-American News reported.

Before trying to board the flight, Hamdan packed up all of his possessions, gave his car to his sister and sold his house in Dearborn, prosecutors told the Detroit News.

Family members who spoke with the Arab-American News before Monday’s guilty plea said they believed Hamdan was falsely accused and set up.

Hamdan, born in Lebanon, came to the U.S. in 2007 as a teenager and became a legal resident with a green card, the Arab-American News reported. In November 2013 he applied for full U.S. citizenship.

His family said he had never expressed interest in joining Hezbollah, describing him as a “normal young adult who liked to smoke hookah, play soccer with friends and joke around,” according to the Arab-American News.

But on Jan. 28, 2014, the FBI recorded a phone conversation between Hamdan and an unnamed government informant in which Hamdan said he intended to go to Lebanon for the purpose of assisting Hezbollah in the Syrian civil war.

Hamdan also disclosed to the informant that he had prior ties to the terrorist organization before he ever came to America, yet he easily passed through the vaunted U.S. State Department screening process.

“Hamadan is heard telling the informant that he had previously been active in Hezbollah’s ranks during the 2006 Lebanon-Israeli war, one year prior to coming to the U.S.,” the Arab-American News reported.

“Those statements might seem bizarre, considering that Hamdan would have only been 14 years old at the time. However, Hamdan went on to tell the informant that he received weapons training from the militant group at a very early age, claiming that it is a common practice within the organization,” the Arab newspaper reported.

“I am leaving behind my family….my uncles tried to convince me [not to go to Syria]…but this is my decision and no one else’s…” Hamdan is heard saying in the recorded audio.

Hamdan is scheduled for sentencing Nov. 14. He faces up to eight years in federal prison.

“It is illegal to lie to federal agents because false statements undermine their ability to investigate crime,” U.S. Attorney Barbara McQuade said in a statement published by the Detroit News.

Hezbollah is listed by the U.S. State Department as a designated foreign terrorist organization responsible for incidents that include bombings of the U.S. Embassy and U.S. Marine Barracks in Beirut in 1983 and the hijacking of TWA flight 847 in 1985, during which a U.S. Navy diver was killed.

The group also allegedly provided explosives training to Iraqi Shia militants since 2004. It has launched rocket attacks against Israel from Lebanon on and off for years.

Dozens of Somali refugees, who are Sunni Muslims, have left the U.S., mostly from Minnesota, to fight for the Islamic State in Syria and also for al-Shabab in Somalia. The problem with Somali refugees got so bad that U.S. Attorney Andrew Luger admitted in April 2015 that “we have a terror recruitment problem in Minnesota.”

But the threat of Shiite Americans leaving to fight for Hezbollah is just as real, said David Gelios, special agent in charge of the FBI’s Detroit office.

“This investigation demonstrates the real threat of individuals residing in the United States who want to travel to Syria to fight on behalf of Hezbollah, a designated terrorist organization and threat to our national security,” David Gelios told the News in a statement.
