THE LATEST 'REQUIRED' INSANITY AT COLLEGE
Exclusive: Patrice Lewis notes school ensuring 'its graduates become professional victims'
We’ve all had our moments of amusement in the last couple of years with the “snowflake generation” needing their “safe spaces” every time they see or hear a word or idea they don’t like. But this absurdity with our young people is getting worse. Just in case you’ve been living under a rock, I’m here to offer you additional evidence that university degrees are seldom worth the paper they’re printed on.
It seems Oregon State University is developing an online course centered on “social justice” new students will soon be required to take. Required to take. (Parents, remember that when you write the next tuition check for your kids.)
According to campus documents, the new program “is intended to provide all students entering Oregon State University an orientation to concepts of diversity, inclusion, and social justice and help empower all OSU students to contribute to an inclusive university community.”
The College Fix notes, “Oregon State’s course, as proposed, would consist of five online modules that include a primer on ‘social justice efforts in Oregon and at OSU,’ instruction on how campus diversity advocates define ‘an inclusive and equitable university community,’ details on how students can ‘incorporate the pursuit of social justice within their university experiences,’ and information on how to ‘explore opportunities for engagement in ongoing social justice learning.'”
Just what IS social justice, anyway? It’s been the buzz term for quite a while now, spouted by all good progressives, but it’s hard to pin down a precise definition. So I turned to that (cough) bastion of trustworthiness, Wikipedia, and learned this:
“Social justice assigns rights and duties in the institutions of society, which enables people to receive the basic benefits and burdens of cooperation. The relevant institutions often include taxation, social insurance, public health, public school, public services, labor law and regulation of markets, to ensure fair distribution of wealth, equal opportunity and equality of outcome.”
Or, in the more blunt words of Urban Dictionary, social justice promotes “tolerance, freedom, and equality for all people regardless of race, sex, orientation, national origin, handicap, etc. … except for white, straight, cisgendered males. F–- those guys, they’re over-privileged no matter what.”
So in the name of “social justice,” we are to put aside the Constitution and Bill of Rights and allllll the limitations those dead white male Founding Fathers put on government … and instead embrace everything they were against, namely: “taxation, social insurance, public health, public school, public services, labor law and regulation of markets, to ensure fair distribution of wealth, equal opportunity and equality of outcome.”
“Fair” distribution of wealth? What’s “fair” about someone receiving compensation for working 80 hours a week, only to be forced by government-hired social justice warriors to turn over 60 percent of his earnings to someone who won’t work at all, but instead spends his days screaming for “justice” from the evil rich people?
“Equality of outcome”? What on earth is that? Does this mean women are supposed to be forced into careers they may not want (engineering? plumbing? air-conditioner repairman? mining?) just because there is an “imbalance” of men?
No wonder all sane and logical people reject social justice. But now OSU will be requiring all students to take these courses.
OSU’s website notes the coursework will teach good progressive victimology and oppression studies by emphasizing how “systemic and local inequities exist and that we all play a role in creating an OSU community that resists and corrects injustice.” As a bonus, students learn “how to identify bias incidents and learn how to interrupt bias in in our daily lives.”
Oh, and let’s not forget the university maintains a large Bias Response Team. The College Fix notes this team consists “of seven high-ranking campus administrators who decide how to respond to reports of perceived harassment. Their responses might include ‘involvement of campus safety offices, providing access and referrals to campus resources, investigation of the incident, and coordinating a community response.'”
In short, OSU is striving to make sure all its graduates become professional victims, social justice whiners and useless community agitators who will spend the rest of their lives complaining they can’t find jobs because no intelligent employer will touch them with a 10-foot pole.
Even those graduating with useful STEM degrees will be tainted with this progressive blather. What will it say to a prospective employer? “Yes, I have a degree in civil engineering, but I also understand the need for fair distribution of wealth, equal opportunity and equality of outcome, so you’d better hire me so I can educate you in those areas. And if I get employed here, I’ll harass you about why you’re not supporting the progressive social justice causes I believe in. But you can’t fire me or I’ll sue you for bias.”
At what point do we admit advanced education has ceased and indoctrination has begun?
At what point do we admit students are no longer expected to emerge “well-rounded” but instead must be sufficiently inculcated with the appropriate worldview before they’re released?
Oh sure, universities dress up their brainwashing with lofty academic euphemisms, but what they’re really saying is: “Think like us or you won’t graduate.”
Look, folks, we’re facing the toughest job market since the Great Depression. It is essential to arm our young people with the tools they need to become productive adults capable of contributing to the economy and supporting a family.
What we don’t need are useless parasites – you know, the professional agitators who spend their productive years complaining about the horrible injustice of people who work for a living, then end up in padded government positions where they put their agitation into law.
If you want your kids to become social justice warriors, by all means cough up the tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars so they can acquire a worthless degree of negative value and live in your basement the rest of their lives.
If your kids have an interest in learning a legitimate STEM subject (science, technology, engineering, medicine), then keep them well away from places like Oregon State University where their education will be diluted with useless progressive claptrap.
Alternately, encourage your children to stay out of the indoctrination centers and become educated in viable in-demand fields through trade schools or vocational education. We always need plumbers, butchers, repair specialists and electricians; we sure as heck don’t need any more social justice whiners.
