An angry North Korea sent out a fiery message against the United States and South Korea, vowing “indiscriminate” nuclear attacks against the two countries if military leaders don’t call off a couple of joint training exercise that just kicked off, Key Resolve and Foal Eagle.
“We will launch an all-out offensive to decisively counter the U.S. and its followers’ hysteric[al] nuclear war moves,” a newsletter on the state-run North Korean KRT news channel said, in comment on Key Resolve and Foal Eagle, BBC found.
The regime also warned “indiscriminate” nuclear strikes against both the United States and South Korea were on the way if the joint exercises didn’t come to an immediate end. The order for a “preemptive nuclear strike of justice” was part of a statement put out by leaders in Pyongyang, BBC reported.
The joint military exercises take place each year. But this year’s involve a larger number of troops than in the past, with 17,000 American and 300,000 South Korean military members expected to turn out for the operations.
Key Resolve is more focused on computer similation tactics, and is due to end March 18. Foal Eagle, meanwhile, involves multiple field exercises and wraps on April 30.
South Korea responded to the threat by telling Pyongyang to avoid any “rash act that brings destruction upon itself,” BBC reported.
“If North Korea ignores our warning and makes provocations, our military will firmly and mercilessly respond to it,” said South Korea’s spokesperson Moon Sang-gyun.
And Japan’s prime minister said, BBC reported: “North Korea’s nuclear and nuclear missile development is absolutely unacceptable. We will coordinate with the internatioanal community to demand that North Korea show restraint.”
