FAITH UNDER FIRE
ISIS BURNS HUNDREDS OF BIBLES IN MOSUL
'They want elimination and they are very serious'
ISIS terrorists cut a video showing the burning of hundreds of Christian Bibles and literature in Mosul, a propaganda and political stunt one analyst said shows how very serious the group is about eradicating all faiths outside of the Islamist sect.
“It’s another example that ISIS means what they say,” said David Curry, the CEO of Open Doors USA, to FoxNews.com. “That’s what makes the debate so powerful. They want elimination and they are very serious.”
The video, “Diwan of education destroys Christian instruction books in Mosul,” was cut by the terror group’s morality police, Christianity Today reported. In it, terrorists are seen piling up hundreds of books with Christian crosses on the cover and lighting them on fire.
“The video is the first specifically showing the burning of Christian books,” the Middle East Media Research Institute’s Jihad and Terrorist Threat Monitor team said, in a statement to FoxNews.com.
And it comes just as the United States is trying to decide whether or not to formally call ISIS’s terror campaign in Iraq genocide. The House voted unanimously this week to label ISIS as guilty of genocide, defined by the U.N. Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of Genocide as “acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group.”
The State Department is being pressed to do the same. Doing so would commit the United States to ratcheting up its actions against ISIS – and some say, it’s about time.
The Christian population in Iraq, which was once a stronghold in the region for the faith, has fallen from 1.5 million to 275,000 since ISIS set itself up as a caliphate.
“The stated purpose [of ISIS] is to eliminate and force the Christians and Yazidi people out of the region,” Curry said. “They are succeeding. The Christian population in the region has greatly diminished. … This has always been genocide. The West has realized that they cannot deny it any longer.”
