Most Americans Say USA is a Racist Society: Poll

An NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll released on Monday found that a majority of American voters believe that the U.S. is a racist society, say people of color experience discrimination and view the Black Lives Matter movement as a positive force for change.

The poll was reportedly conducted from July 9 to 12, while the country was still reeling from the death of George Floyd while in police custody. The poll found that 56 percent of those asked said America is a racist society. NBC News pointed out that it seems to be unclear how much affect the protests had on the opinion. In 1988, the Associated Press reported that 55 percent of those asked called the American society racist.
The new poll did show a shift in some perceptions in recent years. For example, in 2008, about 28 percent of blacks said they are discriminated against in American society. Currently, nearly 60 percent say they face discrimination. About seven in 10 say race relations in the country are bad, compared to 28 percent while President Obama was in office.
The NBC report said that 46 percent of those asked said racism is built into the fabric of society while 44 percent believe that racism is a case-by-case issue and comes down to the particular individual who holds that view.
The poll asked 900 registered voters and women appeared to have a stronger belief that American society is racist, polling at 66 percent, compared to 46 percent of men. Eighty-two percent of registered Democrats agreed that American society was racist compared to 30 percent of Republicans.
The poll showed that only a slight majority of Americans agree with the removal of Confederate statues in public squares while 47 percent of say the statues should stay in place.
“Americans are concerned about issues of inequality, and George Floyd’s death helped contribute to that,” Brenda Lee, who worked on the survey, said. “We’ve moved the needle a great deal in terms of just clearly identifying that we, as Americans, have an issue with racism in this society.”
