An Opportune Time
Jennifer Woodley
‘When the devil had finished every test, he departed from Jesus until an opportune time.’ Luke 4:13 (NRSV)
The time Jesus spent in the wilderness was not the only attempt by Satan to derail him. Christ’s defeat of the enemy in this scene was convincing, but not final. Throughout his ministry Jesus would confront Satan in many forms. Peter’s misunderstanding of Jesus’ calling, Peter’s denial of Jesus, Judas’ betrayal and the ruling leader’s lies and accusations against Jesus, to name a few.
Yet Jesus stood firm and true to his calling.
Satan will hurl his fiery darts towards us at any opportune time. At our moment of susceptibility and weakness. We are told in 1 Peter 5:8 that
‘the enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.’
Lions attack sick, young or straggling animals. They choose victims who are alone or not alert.
Likewise, Satan’s opportune time for attack is when we are suffering or being persecuted. When we doubt God’s word, or are feeling weak, alone, helpless, cut off from believers or when we are so focused on our own troubles that we forget to watch for danger.
As a measure of defense, we are to be self-controlled, alert, stand firm in our faith, keep our eyes on Jesus and resist the devil (1 Peter 5: 8, 9). We must faithfully seek the companionship and encouragement of other believers. Then, says James, ‘he will flee from you.’ (James 4:7)
Where temptation are you most susceptible to right now? How are you preparing to withstand it? Who can stand by you as a means of encouragement and support?
