North Korea Still Provoking The West – Launches Another Missile Test Early Sunday
There has been another missile launch from North Korea, this latest one occurring in the early morning hours Sunday, local time. The distance traveled before crashing into the sea was reportedly approximately 430 miles. This launch comes roughly two weeks after what is believed to have been a failed ballistic missile launch.
CNN reporter Alexandra Field notes that South Korea, Japan and the United States are all engaged in trying to determine the type of missile and other things about the North Korean missile program that might be learned from the trail of evidence.
She points out that there have already been nine ballistic missile test launches over the course of this year alone. This launch occurs in the first week following the election of a new South Korean president, and was likely a signal of some type being aimed in their direction, at a minimum. She details the customary response to this type of event is a meeting of the National Security Council, followed by a condemnation. That meeting was taking place as the reporter was speaking.
Field reminds the audience that the new president of South Korea, Moon, is a Democrat, the first of that party elected to the presidency in ten years. They are considered to be more appeasement inclined than their conservative party predecessors. President Moon ran on a campaign platform of increased engagement with the aggressors to the north, though this may not have been exactly what he had in mind.
She says Moon “previously served as the Chief of Staff for the last Democratic Party president in South Korea, where he was involved with the ‘sunshine policy’ toward North Korea. That was a policy of added engagement with North Korea. It is again something that he has argued for so you’ve got to see what his response will be, now that you see another provocative action by North Korea within literally just the first days that this president has held office here.”
