Update: Mets Tell Christian Player To Keep Quiet About His Faith
He shared his Christian values with love and compassion for all sinners.
infielder Daniel Murphy made headlines simply by answering a reporter’s question regarding homosexuality. The second baseman – a self-identified Christian – was asked to share his opinion on playing alongside a gay teammate as well as the club’s invitation of homosexual MLB star Billy Bean to serve as its “ambassador for inclusion.”
Despite the fact that Murphy offered a compassionate and loving response, his team is apparently anxious to make sure he no longer publicly speaks on any subject aside from baseball.
Although he was merely answering a reporter’s question, ESPN cited a Mets source who confirmed this week that Murphy will no longer be allowed to discuss his personal beliefs with the press.
Tellingly, even Bean stood up for Murphy’s comments, confirming that he has “tremendous admiration and respect” for the player.
“After reading his comments, I appreciate that Daniel spoke his truth,” Bean said. “I really do. I was visiting his team and a reporter asked his opinion about me.”
The comments that seem to have prompted the Mets’ censorship of Murphy included his belief that homosexuals should be treated with love and respect by the Christian community.
“I just think that as a believer trying to articulate it in a way that says just because I disagree with the lifestyle doesn’t mean I’m just never going to speak to Billy Bean every time he walks through the door,” Murphy said. “That’s not love. That’s not love at all.”
