The massacre at the satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo by Islamic militants was yet another incident of intimidation of the Western world from radical Islam.

Given the gravity of the terrorist attack, President Barack Obama’s statement in support of democratic values was rather tepid. In fact, it’s worth noticing that it contained no references to the freedom of expression for which the men and women at the Charlie Hebdo offices died.

It isn’t that this is a surprise, though. After all, in a 2012 speech before the United Nations, the president said something shocking that puts his reluctance to oppose radical Islam into sharp focus: “The future must not belong to those who slander the Prophet of Islam.”

Yes, apparently the freedom of speech — one of the cornerstone values of Western democracies — cannot stand up against the injunction not to “slander the Prophet of Islam.”

President Obama’s comments are the same sort of pusillanimous nonsense that led to Salman Rushdie’s life being threatened by a fatwa by an Iranian despot who believed the West would never defend the author’s freedom of speech.

It’s the same mindset that led to many on the left apologizing for the United States in the days and weeks following 9/11, saying that we brought it on ourselves.

It’s no wonder that Obama has assuaged radical Islam at every turn.

In Egypt, he supported the Islamist government of the Muslim Brotherhood, standing by them until it became clear even the Egyptians were ready for them to go.

In Israel, he’s supported the terrorist organization Hamas, lending credibility to a violent organization that’s spoiled the prospects of Middle East peace for decades.

He’s released numerous Islamic militants from Guantanamo Bay, many of whom have gone to fight with the Islamic State group.

And now, as a terrorist attack has left a dozen people dead in an attempt to silence the voice of freedom, we should look back on what the putative leader of the free world has done to advance the cause of Western values.

The answer is: almost nothing. In fact, he’s decimated them by aligning himself and the left with those who oppose the very freedom democracy was founded on.

President Obama has forgotten the main lesson that radical Islam has taught us: those who trade liberty for “tolerance” will end up with neither.
