In the early hours of Thursday morning, “The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson” on CBS featured a guest musical performance with vehemently anti-religious lyrics, including a line wishing the mother of Jesus “would’ve had an abortion.”
Kristeen Young was host Craig Ferguson’s guest, performing her song, “Pearl of a Girl,” which takes all three of the world’s major, monotheistic religions to task for allegedly repressing women.
“I never knew I was a girl until they stooped to tell me,” Young sang in the first verse of her song. “I never knew I was disturbed until they dropped three volumes on me. But in the Bible/Torah/Quran there are really no good roles for me except concubine and wash woman. I used to be the sad one, now I just wanna stab them.”
The second verse takes her feminist raging even further, taking a shot at Christianity by suggesting “the Virgin” – a reference to the Virgin Mary, mother of Jesus Christ – have preempted the religion by ending her pregnancy: “They’ve needed to have the law so they can legally bind us. They’ve needed to have the church so they can morally ground us. They’ve needed most of the dough, they must be so scared of us. So their stories are of ghosts; I only wish the Virgin would’ve had an abortion.”
In an interview with Paper Mag in June, Young explained she not only writes and performs the songs, but also designs her stage costumes, bragging, “I felt like wearing and making something Satanic since music is so not right now. Even Ozzy’s like the lovable, silly uncle next door.”
She also explained the skirt she wears in the video for “Pearl of a Girl”: “The skirt’s pattern, which I painted on, represents the symbols of three major religions … but I’ve defaced them. The cross and the half moon are upside down and I sewed little metal pieces on the star points of the Star of David to look like blades making it like a martial arts throwing star weapon.”
She also wears heels in the video shaped like upside-down crosses, a symbol commonly associated with Satanism.
“The song,” she explains, “is about the centuries of religious persecution (and again, triumph) of women.”
