Endowed By Their Creator

 

Dear Friend, "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness." On July 4, 1776, the Continental Congress adopted the Declaration of Independence, announcing "that all political connection between [the American colonies] and the State of Great Britain, is and ought to be totally dissolved." And the rest, as they say, is history. Fifty-six members of the Second Continental Congress signed the Declaration, thereby making a solemn pledge:  "with a firm reliance on the protection of divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes and our sacred Honor." Everything was placed on the line for the idea that "all men are created equal" and "endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights." The Declaration mentions God three times:  first as the Creator, then as Supreme Judge of the world, and finally as divine Providence.  John Adams would later declare in October 1798 that the supreme law of the United States, the Constitution, "was made only for a moral and religious people.  It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other." This is the legacy our Founding Fathers left for us, the one we fight to conserve every day.
