Devotional #20 in 1 Peter – Dale Buchanan
“Servants, be subject to your masters with all fear;
not only to the good and gentle, but also to the froward.
For this is thankworthy,
if a man for conscience toward God endure grief, suffering wrongfully.
For what glory is it, if, when ye be buffeted for your faults,
ye shall take it patiently?
But if, when ye do well, and suffer for it,
ye take it patiently, this is acceptable with God.
(1 Peter 2:18-20 KJV).
Peter speaks about an unpopular subject: servanthood with suffering. With respect and proper fear, we obey our boss.
Obey whether he is cruel, unkind, unfair, or a good boss.
Disobedience results in discipline.
It is not pleasing to the Lord when you patiently suffer for your wrongdoing.
You are simply getting the treatment you deserve.
On your job, you are not just helping your family.
You are also representing the Lord. Paul teaches in Colossians 3:22-23,
“Servants, obey in all things your masters according to the flesh; not with eyeservice, as men-pleasers; but in singleness of heart, fearing God;
And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men;”
Discover the difference in your work life when you recognize you are first working for the Lord and secondly for your human boss.
“Knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ.”
Colossians 3:24.
When you have done right on the job, and suffer patiently, that is pleasing to the Lord.
If you patiently suffer when you are disciplined for witnessing (on your own time), or for refusing to do something prohibited by God’s Word, that is pleasing to the Lord.
Always remember: You are working for the Lord.
