Sighing, I clicked out of the news site and set my computer aside.
Are you finding it difficult to keep a positive attitude as you read the news headlines?
Rising prices, lawlessness, politics, and schools being taken over by the liberal agenda are just a few of the current events grabbing our attention.
How do we pay the bills, guide our children, and keep our faith strong in this present world?
Failing on that last one—keeping our faith strong—can quickly rob us of all peace and joy.
However, these events should not take us by surprise.
The Apostle Peter warned long ago that we would face various trials as we live in the ‘last days’. He wrote to the early believers, advising them that they should rejoice despite suffering trials for “a little while.”
He went on to assure them that hardships come
“so that your faith—of greater worth than gold…may be proved genuine and may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed.” (1 Peter 1:6-7 NIV)
The writer of Hebrews also admonishes us to “draw near to God with a sincere heart in full assurance of faith…hold unswervingly to the hope we profess for He who promised is faithful.”
(Hebrews 10:22-23 NIV)
That sounds good, but how do we draw nearer?
First, we must take the time to read and study Scripture and sincerely express our concerns to God through prayer.
Then be vigilant in maintaining regular worship with other Christians.
There is strength in coming together to worship, share needs, and proclaim what God is doing in our lives.
As we encourage others, we are encouraged as well.
“Father, we are living in scary times.
It is easy to fall into despair.
Keep reminding me that nothing in today’s news takes you by surprise.
Help me to diligently study Your Word, and make me a blessing to others; in Jesus’ name, Amen.”
