The Bible has some interesting things to say about foundations. God laid the foundations of the earth at the beginning of time (Job 38:3-7).
Psalms 89:14 NLT says that righteousness and justice are the foundation of God’s throne. 1 Corinthians 3:11 reminds us there is no other foundation laid for our faith than Jesus Christ.
However, sinful humans can abandon God’s foundations of order and righteousness, leading to moral and civil chaos and heartache.
We could lament with the writer of Psalms 11:3 that, “The foundations of law and order have collapsed. What can the righteous do?”
In Matthew 7:24-27, Jesus tells the story of two buildings:
The first had been erected on solid rock and was able to withstand the winds and waves of a severe storm.
The second, constructed upon a foundation of sand, collapsed under the pressure of the storm.
Jesus explained that when we believe in and obey him, we will be like the first building, able to stand firmly in the trials that batter our lives.
The opposite is true of anyone who scorns Jesus and his teaching; they will have no lasting foundation and will eventually be destroyed.
Psalms 75:2-3 NLT tell us, “God says, ‘At the time I have planned, I will bring justice against the wicked. When the earth quakes and its people live in turmoil, I am the one who keeps its foundations firm.’”
The Lord’s justice, plans, and timing, remain unaffected by the rage of Satan and rebellious mankind. He is in control over everything, even natural disasters and people’s choices.
As we look at the chaos and upheaval around us, we can slip into fear, hopelessness, and disillusionment.
Instead, we can build our lives on the firm foundation of God’s unchanging, unconquerable, truth, faithfulness, goodness, and sovereign power and continue to do right.
We will endure and reign eternally with Christ (2 Timothy 2:12), sharing in his glory (Romans 8:16-17 and Colossians 3:3-4) and we will receive our reward as wise builders. 1 Corinthians 3:12-15
PRAYER: Heavenly Father, I thank you that I can trust you to be my firm foundation no matter how chaotic this world becomes.
