A Perfect Partnership - Jennifer Woodley
“Don't be pulled in different directions and don't be worried about a thing.” Philippians 4:6 (The Passion).
There are two definitives to the successful Christian life: right thinking and right practice. They are like two paddles working together in perfect unison smoothly propelling the boat forward. We cannot have one without the other to have efficient, effective motion.
If we follow Paul's instruction and meditate upon all he says in Philippians 4:8, yet do not follow his example in action, we are far from experiencing the abundant life Jesus promises (John 10:10).
Paul urges his readers to 'set their minds' and 'fasten their thoughts'. That is, we are to continuously and intentionally fix our mind upon all that is true, honourable, just, pure, pleasing, commendable, excellent and praiseworthy. And to continuously and intentionally turn our thoughts away from all that is not.
And in perfect alignment with this right thinking, operating in unison with it, must be right actions. Paul exhorts us to 'follow his example' and 'keep on doing all that you have heard and seen in me'. We don't dare give up, but rather, consider seriously our actions and choices. Do they honour Christ and reveal who He is to others? Are they in line with Jesus' teachings? If not, they are simply not right actions.
Right thinking. Right practice. A highly effective partnership that results in more than successful Christian living, but a deeper intimacy with Christ. Let's model our thoughts on this list of high standards and follow Paul's example by modelling our actions after Jesus Himself and we will find that each day, the God of peace, joy and love will accompany us on our journey with Him.
