Jesus delivered a message to instill a trusting faith as a raging wind blew across the stormy sea.
“And behold, there arose a great storm on the sea, so that the boat was being swamped by the waves; but he was asleep.
And they went and woke him, saying,
“Save, Lord; we are perishing.”
And he said to them,
“Why are you afraid, O men of little faith?”
Then he rose and rebuked the winds and the sea; and there was a great calm.
And the men marveled, saying,
“What sort of man is this, that even winds and sea obey him?” (Matthew 8:24-26 RSV)
Our own storms may not be as a strong gale blowing down on us, but the anxiousness we feel is very real.
We need to understand that our Savior is always with us and goes before us to calm the terror that grips us. There is no terrestrial disturbance God’s Spirit hasn’t conquered.
It is the Spirit who ushers in His peace and assurance as we walk by faith and not by sight.
“The wind blows where it wills, and you hear the sound of it, but you do not know whence it comes or whither it goes;
so it is with every one who is born of the Spirit.” (John 3:8 RSV)
“But the path of the righteous is like the light of dawn, which shines brighter and brighter until full day. (Proverbs 4:18 RSV)
“He dawns on them like the morning light, like the sun shining forth upon a cloudless morning, like rain that makes grass to sprout from the earth.” (2 Samuel 23:4 RSV).
