Ever Feel Like You've Failed God?
Michael Edwards
The son declared, 'Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son.' Luke 15:21 BSB
Do you ever feel like you are failing in God's eyes as His child?
The son declared, 'Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son.' Luke 15:21 BSB
Do you ever feel like you are failing in God's eyes as His child?
Like you are not doing enough and messing up too much, as I have felt?
Maybe a disappointment and not worthy of being called His child?
It is clear from Jesus' account of the Prodigal son in Luke 15:11-32, in man's eyes, the son had failed the father in a big way.
It is clear from Jesus' account of the Prodigal son in Luke 15:11-32, in man's eyes, the son had failed the father in a big way.
The son finally awoke to what he had done once he had lost everything and hit rock bottom.
He only had two options, home or death.
What kind of reception do you think he expected when his father saw him?
What kind of reception do you think he expected when his father saw him?
If I were to put myself in the son's shoes for a moment, I would be fearful of going home, afraid of my father's disappointment, anger and possible rejection.
I am sure the son had similar thoughts and fears.
We can sense just how low the son felt by his statement in verse 21, not worthy of being called his child.
But look at his father's shocking response,
But look at his father's shocking response,
But the father said to his servants, 'Quick! Bring the best robe and put it on him. Put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. Bring the fattened calf and kill it. Let us feast and celebrate. For this son of mine was dead and is alive again! He was lost and is found!' So they began to celebrate. Luke 15:22-24 BSB
The Father's reaction is the exact opposite of what a failure might expect.
The Father's reaction is the exact opposite of what a failure might expect.
Everything he did and said declared that you will always be my child and I love you dearly.
There was no judgment, condemnation, or punishment.
Only the father's relief and joy that his son, who had been lost, was safely back home.
Our Father wants us safely home too, and He did everything necessary to get us there.
Our Father wants us safely home too, and He did everything necessary to get us there.
He is watching and waiting with joy for that day to arrive.
Rest assured that absolutely nothing can separate us from His love that is in Christ Jesus.
Until then, love God and love people and you will do well.
