My Fifty-Fifth Birthday
Ken Ebright
"I have done hard and tiring work, and many times I did not sleep. I have been hungry and thirsty, and many times I have been without food. I have been cold and without clothes.
2 Corinthians 11:27." (NCV)
It was my fifty-fifth birthday, and I was concerned about how my rent was always increasing.
I thought that if I could buy a home, I might be able to keep better control of my housing costs.
However, after investigating things, I was discouraged to learn that I couldn't afford to purchase a home.
This letdown led me to ask the Lord if he truly loved and cared about me.
Later that day, in my daily reading of the Bible, I now know that he answered me.
Still concerned about my finances, for some reason, I read the wrong day's verses.
The one that really spoke to me was 2 Corinthians 11:27, listed above.
God chose Paul, and yet, there were many times when he was without food, clothes, or shelter.
After I considered that truth, the Lord continued speaking to me as I read my morning devotion.
It talked about a girl who had endured difficult struggles.
She found comfort and peace amid her battle in reciting Bible verses that reminded her of God's presence.
It is ironic to me that God used my error and a separate daily devotional to speak the truth in harmony to me.
The Lord had heard my cry and reminded me that I am not the only one who has difficulties.
I have got it pretty good when I consider Paul and others who have had it so much worse.
Philippians, reminds me that the Lord provides everything I need:
"My God will use his wonderful riches in Christ Jesus to give you everything you need. Philippians 4:19." (NCV)
I need to believe and trust that he will always keep a roof over my head and provide a warm bed to sleep in.
Despite my occasional worries and fear, he has always kept his word, and when I trust him, I have great peace.
Do you trust the Lord to meet your needs?
