U.N. LAUNCHES ANOTHER RESOLUTION AGAINST ISRAEL

Claims violations of women's rights

It’s no secret that women’s rights generally are dismal in the Middle East.

So when the United Nations Economic and Social Council recently voted 40-2 to approve a resolution against such violations, it targeted the only country in the region that upholds women’s rights, Israel.

The United States and Canada were the only votes against the resolution July 24.

The non-profit legal group Liberty Counsel said the U.N. Council “concluded its annual session by ignoring the world’s worst abusers of women’s rights, refusing to pass a single resolution about women in Saudi Arabia, Iran, Pakistan, or DR Congo, all of which ranked in the top ten worst countries in the 2018 Global Gender Gap Report, produced by the World Economic Forum.”

Liberty Counsel noted that of 20 items on the U.N. Council’s 2018-2019 agenda, only one focused on condemning a specific country.

“All the other focus areas concern global topics such as disaster relief assistance and the use of science and technology for development. 

However, much of the resolution did not deal with women’s rights but instead included anti-Israel rhetoric, accusing the Jewish state of numerous crimes and alleged violations of human rights,” Liberty Council’s report said.

Israel’s policies, the resolution said, “reaffirms that the Israeli occupation remains a major obstacle for Palestinian women and girls with regard to the fulfillment of their rights, and their advancement, self-reliance and integration in the development of their society.”

Liberty Counsel said the resolution “completely ignores how Palestinian women’s rights are suppressed by their own governing authorities – the Palestinian Authority in the West Bank, and Hamas in Gaza.”

“It also does not mention how women are discriminated against within patriarchal Palestinian society.”

It’s far from the first time the United Nations has targeted Israel.

The council also voted to approve a resolution “to state that Israel’s occupation of Palestinian and Syrian lands has allegedly violated the economic and social rights of Palestinians and contributed to the economic hardship of the country,” the report said.

“This U.N. Economic and Social Council is a farce that has reached new heights of absurdity by singling out Israel alone on women’s rights while ignoring the countries that are the world’s worst abusers of women’s rights,” said Liberty Counsel’s founder Mat Staver. 

“There are women in Saudi Arabia, Iran, Pakistan, and Yemen who are abused and tortured under harsh male guardianship laws for simply being female. The U.N. is a worthless institution and an insult.”

The many attacks from the U.N. on Israel earlier this year prompted the United Nations to drop entirely out of UNESCO, the U.N. Education, Scientific and Cultural Organization.

That committee previously has designated ancient Jewish sites as Palestinian heritage sites. WND reported UNESCO designated the Temple Mount, the likely site of the original Jewish temples during biblical times, with Muslim names.

The U.S. already had stopped paying hundreds of millions of dollars in fees imposed by UNESCO, and Israel had withheld about $10 million.

The AP said new UNESCO Director General Audrey Azoulay appeared to be trying to address the concerns, launching a “Holocaust education website” and authoring guidelines on fighting anti-Semitism.

WND reported the U.S. announcement of its withdrawal was followed by the agency’s “delusional” decision to declare the Cave of the Patriarchs in Hebron a “Palestinian heritage site.”

President Trump’s administration has been highly critical of the United Nations in general and in particular of its anti-Israel bias. 

A petition is encouraging Congress and the president to defund the U.N. and expel its headquarters from the U.S.

UNESCO already had declared the birthplace of Jesus in Bethlehem and another location in the “state of Palestine” as Islamic heritage sites.

UNESCO said at one point it “firmly deplores the continuous storming of Al-Aqṣa Mosque/Al-Ḥaram Al-Sharif by Israeli right-wing extremists and uniformed forces, and urges Israel, the occupying Power, to take necessary measures to prevent provocative abuses that violate the sanctity and integrity of Al-Aqṣa Mosque/Al-Ḥaram Al-Sharif.”

East Jerusalem has been part of Israel since the 1967 war. Palestinians want the city as part of a future state.

WND reported in 2017 that Arabs at the U.N. were placing the blame for Palestinian men who beat their wives on Israel.

The outlandish claim came during a meeting of the U.N. Human Rights Council when a report on violence against women was submitted, reported Palestinian Media Watch.

According to PMW, the report claimed there was “a clear linkage between the prolonged occupation and violence against women.”

However, U.N. Watch Director Hillel Neuer responded immediately.

The report on “violence against women” was undermined, he explained, “by its subservience to the recurring and unproven assumption … that there is, quote, ‘clear linkage between the prolonged occupation and violence against women.’

“In other words, what you are saying is as follows: When Palestinian men beat their wives, it’s Israel’s fault.”

He asked where was the evidence for a “clear linkage.”

“Where is the data. I don’t see it anywhere in the report,” he said.

And he questioned why those submitting the report had not done the basic comparisons, such as looking at similar statistics from Lebanon, Jordan, and other Arab nations.

“Why have you not done so?” he asked.

Besides, he said, Arab television routinely promotes messages to men about how to beat their wives, he said.
