An immoral issue – we must take responsibility
This past week a bill was defeated in the Senate that would have required the federal government to balance the budget each year. How sad that such a bill is even needed. It’s almost unfathomable that our national debt now exceeds $21 trillion and is growing out of control. It’s a number so big it’s hard to wrap our minds around.
Our spending is teetering on the brink of no return. The Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget estimated the annual deficits could reach 2.1 trillion per year in the next decade. Can you imagine our debt growing at that rate?
It is downright immoral for us to continue piling up this debt on the backs of our children because we won’t take action to do something about it.
President Trump has asked Congress to cut $15 billion from several programs, but even this small budget cut has been too much for Congress to agree upon. Despite a Republican-held majority in Congress we still have yet to see any spending cuts. Both sides of the political aisle continue to perpetuate this mounting problem.
I’m writing to you about this because we Christians can do something about it.
Here’s the truth, our most powerful influence in the political process to advance change is at the voting booth. We have the opportunity this year to take notice of what our representatives have done and what they have not done, and hold them accountable.
We are working hard to empower millions of Christians across the country through mobilization efforts in churches, on Christian university campuses, through TV and radio ads, by social media, and through advanced voting technology to engage Christians to vote!
I hope to see millions of Christians take the lead by electing representatives who understand that spending cuts and a balanced budget are necessary if we hope to reverse this unbelievable burden of debt.
Without the work of organizations like My Faith Votes, many Christians simply won’t vote. It’s estimated that 50 million registered Christians will not vote in this year’s midterm elections. For the sake of future generations, we have a moral responsibility to ensure this doesn’t happen. All 435 seats in the U.S. House of Representatives are up for election and 35 seats in the U.S. Senate; so much is at stake.
Leading up to the November 2016 elections My Faith Votes reached 1.5 million people per day because of your tremendous financial support and prayers. 85% of Christians we reached turned out to vote their values - well above the national average of 55%.
We must reach even more Christians this year to vote for leaders who aren’t afraid to roll-up their sleeves and do the difficult work. We need to mobilize a force that will vote for representatives who will protect the future of America and the Judeo-Christian principles that have formed the basis of our nation and birthed freedom, peace and prosperity.
We must not be the generation that allows future generations to inherit the consequences of our irresponsibility. We cannot allow this to happen on our watch.
I’m asking you to prayerfully give your best gift to My Faith Votes today to support our voting efforts to reach Christians this year. We cannot stand by and watch our brothers and sisters of faith sit on the sidelines; we must call them to our duty and unique responsibility to bring salt and light to the public square – to vote!
It’s an honor to be on this mission with you.
