'LUNACY ALERT' WARNS OF $1,000 FINE FOR HANDING OUT STRAWS
California bill would forbid waiters from delivering the little things before requested
They don’t call it the “land of fruits and nuts” only for the edible fruits and nuts that are grown there.
California has lived up to its reputation once again by proposing a law that would fine wait staff at restaurants $1,000 if they give a customer a plastic straw for a drink before before the customer asks for one.
On The social-media aggregating news site Twitchy issued a “LUNACY alert!”
It blamed the perpetual Democratic majority in the state legislature: “Dems want to punish restaurant waitstaff for doing WHAT?”
It turns out Assembly Bill 1884 states, “This bill would prohibit a food facility, as specified, where food may be consumed on the premises from providing single-use plastic straws to consumers unless requested by the consumer.”
The State of California is considering a law that would fine waiters $1,000 or throw them in jail for 6 months if they BRING A STRAW TO YOUR TABLE without you asking for it. These people are absolute lunatics. https://t.co/42PqrjsX4x— Robby Starbuck (@robbystarbuck) January 25, 2018
Dave Walker tweeted “as always the lawmakers are beyond being rational … my 88 y.o. mother has the same problem … #dementia or just plain dumb?”
Commented Twitchy, “Having solved all other problems in California, some state progressives in the legislature and elsewhere have set their sights on the next priority.”
Added Nick Short, “This sounds like a joke but sadly it isn’t.”
The wait staff also could face “up to 6 months in jail.”
The libertarian website Reason explained Assemblyman Charles Calderon, the Democratic majority leader in California’s lower house, “has introduced a bill to stop sit-down restaurants from offering customers straws with their beverages unless they specifically request one. Under Calderon’s law, a waiter who serves a drink with an unrequested straw in it would face up to 6 months in jail and a fine of up to $1,100.”
Calderon justified his plan.
“We need to create awareness around the issue of one-time use plastic straws and its detrimental effects on our landfills, waterways, and oceans.”
Among the snide remarks that followed:
“It’s the last straw.”
“The straw that broke the Californians’ back.”
Snarked Twitchy: “If you live long enough you see everything.”
It was unclear whether or not customers would be expected to request a straw for malts or Slurpees, or just find another way to drink them.
