I want to share with you what I am expecting in 2018.
In light of all that has transpired in recent months, I sense that this new year will bring about both unprecedented challenges to and opportunities for true liberty. I'm speaking of the kind of liberty that finds its expression in people who understand that God is the Source of our liberties.
But at the outset, I want to make one thing clear:
2018 could well be the most challenging year we have yet faced regarding open and hostile threats to our religious liberties. These threats will require people of faith, like you and me, to rediscover the meaning of three powerful words:
"G I V E M E L I B E R T Y !"
Patrick Henry spoke that immortal phrase in 1775 at a time when Virginians were divided regarding whether to join the rapidly spreading flames of revolutionary war. Henry began his speech by challenging his colleagues to not “shut our eyes" to the truth, courageously stating:

"For my part, whatever anguish of spirit it may cost, I am willing to know the whole truth; to know the worst, and to provide for it."
I must tell you, I have a similar “anguish" in my spirit when I consider the difficulties we face in this increasingly hostile culture. In recent days, we have witnessed two more examples of hostility by federal judges forcing religious organizations and Christian-owned businesses to violate their beliefs.
+ + The Scarlet "H" They Want Us To Wear…
Perhaps most dangerous of all, the subversives of our day are attempting to brand people of faith and faith-based organizations with a “hate" label. Once you are marked with their “Scarlet H" of hate, the PC enforcers empower themselves to launch baseless and almost unlimited attacks.
Liberty Counsel is now openly targeted as a “hate group," facing blatant discrimination. The Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) is leading the assault, and commercial entities like Apple, Amazon, GuideStar, and others have followed suit.
These are perilous times! If we do not persevere with all vigilance, we will lose our liberties! It was in this same spirit that Patrick Henry rose to speak in his day. But his call was not an easy one:
"Shall we acquire the means of effectual resistance, by lying supinely on our backs?... There is no retreat but in submission and slavery! Our chains are forged! Their clanking may be heard on the plains of Boston!"
In the year ahead, we face similar choices. We can lay “supinely on our backs." Or, we can hear the “clanking" of the anti-faith chains and rise to the challenge of true liberty!
+ + My guiding directive for 2018.
This is the choice we face in America today. And this is the challenge that guides our staff's every strategic effort.
There is no holding back in 2018! We must fight back against each and every attack on our liberties. And we must take every opportunity to advance faith, family, life, and liberty.
Liberty Counsel's legal team is working in courtrooms across the nation to protect and advance our core tenets of liberty, life, and family. And our Liberty Counsel Action team is working on our behalf inside the corridors of power on Capitol Hill to promote and pass legislative measures essential to our cause.
It is vital that we have a strong voice for faith-based liberty in these debates. We cannot allow anti-faith forces to discriminate against us. And we must defend the pro-faith and pro-family advances of the Trump administration from the constant barrage of attacks.
So what is our response? Once again, let us turn to Patrick Henry:
"Is life so dear, or peace so sweet, as to be purchased at the price of chains and slavery? Forbid it, Almighty God! I know not what course others may take; but as for me, GIVE ME LIBERTY or give me death!"
In this same spirit, I am making "Give Me Liberty" the guiding directive for Liberty Counsel and Liberty Counsel Action in 2018. I am personally recommitting myself to this grand ideal and asking my staff to do the same.
