‘The child grew and became strong in spirit, and he was in the wilderness until the day he appeared publicly to Israel.’ Luke 1:80

What is this wilderness that John the Baptist finds himself in? 

What is this place filled with solitude, silence, and seclusion? This is the place where John was positioned by the leading of Spirit. 

A place devoid of distractions that enabled him to fully focus on his Father. 

A place to prayerfully listen to the voice of the Spirit and a place to become strengthened. 

A place of preparation for the public journey ahead.
Wilderness. Although the word sounds uninviting, it is the very place, we as Christ followers, ought to welcome and embrace in our lives – often. 

Withdrawing to a place of silence, solitude and seclusion enables us to become still and immersed in our Father’s loving presence. 

It is here that empowering takes place. 

The mysterious work of God happens in wilderness places, equipping and transforming us for the journey ahead. 

There is no other way to find what we need for the Christian life. We must respond to the leading of the Spirit to withdraw and allow ourselves to be worked upon by the Father.

John the Baptist was led into a lonely, isolated place for a time of transformation. 

In the wilderness, his spirit was made strong. 

Where is our wilderness? 

Let nothing, no earthly distraction hinder us. 

Let’s resolve to respond to the Spirit who leads us to places of replenishing and refreshing. Put aside the seemingly important and urgent. 

Know what is really needed. Distractions can wait. 

Welcome the wilderness and welcome God’s work there.
