ELECTION 2016
PRO-LIFE LEADERS PRAISE TRUMP'S NEW POLICY DIRECTOR
'An excellent hire' for 'movement and our legislative priorities'
Leading pro-life advocates are praising Donald Trump’s hiring of John Mashburn as a top domestic policy adviser.
Marjorie Dannenfelser, president of the Susan B. Anthony List, a national pro-life organization, called it “an excellent hire, especially for the pro-life movement and our legislative priorities.”
In a column published by The Pulse 2016, a project of the American Principles Project, Dannenfelser said she has known Mashburn for many years and regards him as “a smart strategist with deep pro-life roots.”
“John is well-respected across every issue set. For him, the life issue is foundational and one which helped draw him into politics,” she said.
Penny Nance, president and CEO of Concerned Women for America, told the Washington Examiner she regards Mashburn as “a rock solid pro-lifer” and “someone we can work with.”
Longtime conservative lobbyist Dennis Stephens told the paper the Mashburn hire “and the strong tax cut plan and the strong border protection and national security plan prove Donald Trump is pulling the Reagan Coalition together” and will be a “very effective general election candidate.”
Dannenfelser noted Mashburn served as chief of staff to Sen. Thom Tillis, R-N.C., who she described as “an outspoken advocate for the unborn and their mothers since his election” in 2014.
Prior to working for Tillis, Mashburn served in the leadership offices of the Senate majority leader, Senate Republican Conference secretary and the House majority whip.
He also has held leadership positions under the chairman and ranking senator of several congressional committees and has worked for non-profit public policy groups.
Dannenfelser said that perhaps “the best indication of John’s longtime pro-life advocacy is that he once served Sen. Jesse Helms, a well-known pro-life activist and leader of the conservative movement.”
Sen. Helms fought heroically to stop abortion on-demand in our nation and for the protection of unborn children, mothers, and taxpayers.
Dannenfelser noted Trump has promised to defund Planned Parenthood, promote the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act and appoint justices who will protect and defend the Constitution.
In the Aug. 6, 2015, Fox News debate, Trump was confronted with his statement in 1999 that he was “very pro-choice” and even supported partial-birth abortion.
“I’ve evolved on many issues over the years,” he replied. “And you know who else has? Is Ronald Reagan evolved on many issues. And I am pro-life.’
Explaining his change of view, he said “what happened is friends of mine years ago were going to have a child, and it was going to be aborted.”
“And it wasn’t aborted. And that child today is a total superstar, a great, great child. And I saw that. And I saw other instances. And I am very, very proud to say that I am pro-life.”
