JERUSALEM MAYOR TELLS CITIZENS: PACK HEAT
Israeli deaths spark pro-gun quip: 'It's an imperative'

Nir Barkat, mayor of Jerusalem, has sent out a bold advisory to city residents in the wake of several killings, stabbings and attacks on Israelis, telling them in the bluntest of language they might want to consider packing heat.
“Given the current escalation in the security situation, those with a licensed firearm who know what to do with it must go out with [their weapons],” he said to Army Radio. “It’s an imperative. It’s like military reserve duty.”
Barkat’s statements come on the heels of the killing of two Israelis in the Old City this week, and the wounding of several more by pro-Palestinian supporters. The violence against the Israelis was sparked in part by calls from the Palestinian Authority, Hamas and other terror-type fighters and Islamic jihadists to “liberate” the Holy Land from its Israeli occupants, Israel Today reported.
Barkat’s call is a 180-degree twist from what President Obama puts out during times of gun-related violence in America. As with the recent shooting deaths of several at an Oregon community college, Obama uses such incidents of gun-related violence to call for crackdowns on the Second Amendment. He also derides those who advocate responding to school-related shootings with the arming of teachers, staffers and campus guards.
Barkat, meanwhile, said more guns in the hands of law-abiding citizens, not less, would make the city safer.
“Possessing weapons increases the confidence of residents, who know that in addition to police there are many people who are not afraid to intervene,” Barkat said, Israel Today reported.
