ELECTION 2016
BEN CARSON TAKES LEAD IN NEW POLL
Survey finds ex-neurosurgeon with surging numbers
Former neurosurgeon Ben Carson has taken a slight lead over the other declared and likely Republican candidates for president in a recent poll from Monmouth University.
He leads with 11 percent, a four point jump from the same pollsters just two months ago.
Coming in second: Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, who has yet to declare, with 10 percent. Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush and Sen. Marco Rubio are tied at third with 9 percent.
The poll of more than 1,000 adults was conducted between June 11 and June 14, before Bush announced his campaign.
Rounding out the list of candidates are former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee at fourth, with 8 percent; Sen. Rand Paul, 6 percent; Sen. Ted Cruz, 5 percent; New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, 4 percent; former Texas Gov. Rick Perry, 4 percent; and former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum, 3 percent.
Christie has yet to declare.
Former business executive Carly Fiorina, Sen. Lindsey Graham, Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal, Ohio Gov. John Kasich, former New York Gov. George Pataki and millionaire businessman Donald Trump all fall below the top-ten cut-off criteria being used by CNN and Fox News to determine which candidates are given broadcast stage time during the August debates.
