Vietnam Vet Found Out Granddaughter Was Learning the Quran in School… So He Took Action

When Vietnam veteran Herb Mays found out his granddaughter was being taught the principles and beliefs of Islam, he promptly took action by removing her from the Westmoreland, Tenn., middle school.

Mays, who is a silver star and purple heart recipient, was outraged when he learned that the middle school social studies class was teaching the Quran.

“It says Allah is the creator. He’s the god who created us all. I don’t believe Allah created the heavens and the earth, so I have a problem with this being taught to children in the school,” he explained.

The former soldier turned pastor describes the curriculum as one-sided, telling the news site, “We don’t teach the Bible. We can’t carry the Bible anymore to school, we can’t pray in school, so I’m upset that the seventh-grade social studies class is learning about the Quran,”

A state spokesman remarked on the situation explaining that while the curriculum allows for sixth grade students to learn the Old and New Testaments as well as other Christian texts, it is up to the individual districts to craft the specifics of their own curriculum.

In contrast, according to the state website, world religion is required for seventh graders.

Mays’ 13-year-old granddaughter described the extreme discomfort she felt while learning about the five pillars of Islam and their beliefs and practices.

“It didn’t feel right doing this. It just made me feel it wasn’t right doing all this stuff and learning what they believe in because it’s not what I know and it just didn’t feel right,” she told WCIV (H/T EAGNews).

Mays hopes that the world religions course will be terminated at the school and as such is making a call to action by speaking out.

“Yes, I think it’s a radical stand, I really do. But I stand up for what I believe,”said Mays. “I think what’s wrong with the world today is that good people don’t stand up and evil prevails. And so I’m just making a stand.”
