The sheriff of an Arizona county bordering Mexico expressed grave concerns over the potential use of existing tunnels by radical Islamic terrorists to sneak into the United States before the Senate Homeland Security and Government Affairs Committee.

On Tuesday, Sheriff Mark Dannels of Cochise County, Ariz., described a recently discovered tunnel from Mexico that led straight into his county, making it easy for members of the Islamic State group to smuggle militants, drugs, or even weapons and parts for weapons of mass destruction.

“You’re looking at a large amount of drugs, money, and what you’re alluding to is those terrorists or those people who pay the price to come in our country and harm our citizens,” Dannels said.

“I’m very concerned about that,” the sheriff added. “If you can bring drugs or product through, you can bring terrorists through, so it’s of great concern.”

Dannels’ testimony was in response to a question from Sen. Kelly Ayott, R-N.H., asking if he agreed with the assessment of U.S. Southern Command commander Gen. John Kelly who warned the Armed Services Committee about the capabilities of Latin American countries smuggling weapons, parts and militants across our borders through the use of smuggling networks.

“I 100 percent agree with what the general is saying,” Dannels stated at the hearing.

Even more disturbing, during Kelly’s testimony about similar issues, he pointed out that individuals from terrorism-linked countries like Somalia and Pakistan are already taking advantage of the loose nature of the U.S. southern border.

“Last year, ISIS adherents posted discussions on social media calling for the infiltration of the U.S. southern border,” Kelly said of the growing threat to America (H/T Breitbart).

Dannels’ testimony concerning the recently discovered tunnel system was backed up by U.S. Border Patrol Agent Chris Cabrera, who remarked that a staggering six out of ten illegal immigrants are not apprehended when crossing the border.

Only one Islamic State militant successfully infiltrating the United States using a tunnel system like the one Dannels uncovered carrying a weapon of mass destruction could equal a major domestic disaster.

And if that were to happen, there’s no reason to believe that President Barack Obama would finally agree to secure the border even then. He’s not a man to let the deaths of Americans interfere with his agenda.
