Scores killed by group trying to overthrow Pakistani government

The Taliban on Tuesday attacked the Army Public School in Peshawar, Pakistan, leaving behind a toll of victims estimated at 140, including some 130 children, authorities report.

Survivors reported the Pakistani Taliban, known as the TTP, executed the defenseless schoolchildren one by one.

“The United States condemns in the strongest possible terms today’s horrific attack on the Army Public School in Peshawar, Pakistan. Our hearts and prayers go out to the victims, their families, and loved ones,” President Obama said from the White House in a statement.

“By targeting students and teachers in this heinous attack, terrorists have once again shown their depravity,” Obama continued. “We stand with the people of Pakistan, and reiterate the commitment of the United States to support the government of Pakistan in its efforts to combat terrorism and extremism and to promote peace and stability in the region.”

Early reports from the Pakistan Home Department indicate that of the approximately 500 students and teachers believed to have been inside the school when the shooting began, about 140 are dead, including about 130 children.

The Taliban attackers were reported to have been wearing police uniforms and suicide vests.

According to eyewitnesses, six attackers came in a car, set fire to it and then entered the school compound at about 10 a.m. by scaling the wall.

“We thought it must be the children playing some game,” a worker at the school told Reuters. “But then we saw a lot of firearms with them.”

The terrorists also are reported to have killed a teacher by setting the teacher on fire in front of students in a classroom.

The private Pakistani military-run school has grades one through 10.

“The TTP is ready for a long, long war against the U.S. puppet state of Pakistan,” a Taliban commander, Jihad Yar Wazir, told the Daily Beast. “We are just displaced, but we are still in positions to attack wherever we want.”

Yar Wazir justified the killings as fitting retribution.

“The parents of the army school are army soldiers and they are behind the massive killing of our kids and indiscriminate bombing in North and South Waziristan,” which are the Taliban strongholds. “To hurt them at their safe haven and homes—such an attack is perfect revenge.”

The Taliban attack follows a “lone wolf” terrorist attack Monday in Sydney, Australia, in which Man Haron Monis, an Iranian refugee self-identified as a “sheik,” held 17 people hostage in a downtown café. The hostage-taker and two hostages were killed as police stormed the café.

According to a Fox News report, the Taliban terror attack was the worst in Pakistan in years.

The report said Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif rushed to Peshawar to show his support for the victims.

Fox News said the attack was carried out by a relatively small number of militants from the Tehreek-e-Taliban group, a Pakistani militant group trying to overthrow the government.

“My son was in uniform in the morning. He is in a casket now,” Tahir Ali, a parent, said of 14-year-old Abdullah.

The attack began in the morning hours when gunmen went into the school. Police officer Javed Khan reported they were firing at random. He said Army commandos arrived quickly, and a battle followed, with gunfire and explosions.

Taliban spokesman Mohammed Khurasani claimed responsibility for the attack in a phone call to media.

He said that six suicide bombers had carried out the attack in revenge for the killings of Taliban members at the hands of Pakistani authorities.

The Pakistani chief minister, however, according to Fox News, said there were eight attackers, dressed in military uniforms. Two were killed by security forces and one blew himself up, said Pervaiz Khattak, noting the rest continued fighting.

NBC News reported Maj. Gen. Asim Bajwa, a spokesman for the Pakistani military, said at least 132 children were killed along with 10 staff and seven militants. But the numbers remained uncertain.

“They didn’t take any hostages initially and started firing in the hall,” he told the network.

That report quoted a student saying, “The gunmen entered class by class and shot some kids one by one.”

The International Business Times reported the attack was in “revenge” for the awarding of the Nobel Peace Prize to Malala Yousafzai, the young girl who became an international sensation after surviving a Taliban attack that targeted her because she was going to school.

Yousafzai issued a statement condemning the attack.

“I condemn these atrocious and cowardly acts and stand united with the government and armed forces of Pakistan whose efforts so far to address this horrific event are commendable,” she said. “I, along with millions of others around the world, mourn these children, my brothers and sisters – but we will never be defeated.”

Yousafzai was shot by the Taliban in 2012 on a school bus near Peshawar. She survived, moved to the U.K. and has since become a worldwide symbol for the fight against oppression of women
