Decapitation suspect's values seen as 'mainstream'

Reports have been flooding the West in recent months of Muslim terrorists beheading Christians in the Middle East, imposing crucifixion as a penalty, killing children and abducting women for the purpose of sexual slavery.

But those are the “radicals” who don’t represent Islam, Obama administration officials and others repeat. President George W. Bush said Islam is a “religion of peace,” and Obama frequently has defended Islam, most recently insisting the brutal ISIS army that has taken over portions of Syria and Iraq has nothing to do with the religion.

But are the radicals really “radical”?

One expert says the atrocities and acts of violence are the real Islam.

Andrew Bostom, a top Islam scholar who has written “The Legacy of Jihad: Islamic Holy War and the Fate of Non-Muslims” and “The Legacy of Islamic Antisemitism: From Sacred Texts to Solemn History,” says that’s the reality, even in America.

“Like OK Beheader, Mainstream Assembly of Muslim Jurists of America Condones Stone Adulterers, & Sharia Supremacism,” he tweeted recently.

He was referring to Muslim convert Alton Nolen, who is accused of beheading a co-worker at an Oklahoma plant.

According to local reports, Nolen, aka “Jah’Keem Yisrael,” was telling workers “of an Islamic teaching that said women should be stoned for an offense.”

An argument followed, Nolen shortly later was fired, and then he returned and allegedly beheaded co-worker Colleen Hufford.

In an online posting, Bostom said the argument “was certainly” over adultery.

He noted Reuters reported Saturday the stoning death of a 33 year-old mother in Somalia accused of adultery that “comported with the Shariah-complaint worldview of the Oklahoma beheading suspect.”

Bostom explained that The Hedayah text of Sunni Islamic law states: “A married person convicted of whoredom is to be stoned – When a person is fully convicted of whoredom; if he be married, let him undergo the punishment of Rajim, that is, lapidation, or stoning to death, because the Prophet condemned Maaz to be thus stoned to death, who was married; and he has also declared, It is unlawful to spill the blood of a Muslim, excepting only for three causes, namely apostasy, whoredom after marriage, and murder.”

He noted contemporary validation of the Shariah mandate to stone adulterers to death was provided March 31, 2005, on the website of the esteemed cleric Yusuf al-Qaradawi.

Qaradawi has a regular Al-Jazeera program on Shariah that is wildly popular, Bostom said. He also has been honored by the government of Qatar  with the creation of the Al-Qaradawi Centre for Islamic Moderation.

On his website, Qaradawi said: “The issue of stoning to death as a punishment for married adulterer and adulteress, the statement that there is no verse stipulating that punishment is not correct. It is to be made crystal clear that the punishment is explicitly sanctioned by both the Quran and the Prophetic Tradition.”

Bostom said in addition, the Kuwaiti Encyclopedia of Islamic Jurisprudence specifically states: “Muslim jurists are unanimous on the fact stoning to death is a specified punishment for married adulterer and adulteress.”

“A concluding – and very chilling – example validating the application of stoning to death for adultery, perhaps most relevant to Nolen/Jah’Keem Yisrael’s Islamic views, has an active American source: the Assembly of Muslim Jurists of America,” Bostom added.

He said the group has issued rulings that sanction the killing of apostates and “blasphemers” and condones “marital rape.”
