Punishment and Discipline – Jennifer Woodley
“Endure trials for the sake of discipline.” Hebrews 12:7 (NRSV)
We often use these two words interchangeably in our western culture.
However, the Word of God does not.
Punishment is a sign of God's displeasure and a retribution for a sin we have committed.
Discipline is a sign of God's love, and a means of training to instruct us for Godly living.
In Hebrews, discipline is likened to strength training.
The author encourages us to “lift your drooping hands and weak knees” (verse 12), so that our spiritual muscles may become strong and healthy.
Discipline is an act of training for our good, “so that we may share in His holiness” (verse 10) and “so that what is lame may not be put out of joint, but rather be healed” (verse 13).
Discipline creates “straight paths for our feet.”
Paths that change us to become more like Christ.
We must continue to remember that Jesus suffered, and we are His dearly, beloved children if we are disciplined (made strong) like Him through suffering.
“For the Lord disciplines those whom He loves and chastises every child whom he accepts.”
So let us endure patiently and determinedly through trials, which teach us to live righteously, so that we may avoid the Lord's punishment.
Though trials may seem unpleasant at the time, we will not lose heart, knowing that God helps us and His discipline will yield fruit if we allow ourselves to be trained by it.
'Heavenly Father, forgive me when I resist the strength training you allow for my good.
Keep me strong and willing to be moulded through trials to become more like Jesus and glorify His name. Amen.'
