A Just God in an Unfair Life

“But as for me, I almost lost my footing. My feet were slipping, and I was almost gone. For I envied the proud when I saw them prosper despite their wickedness.” Psalms 73:2-3

“Life is so unfair!” 

How many times have we said these words? And how many times has someone replied, “So? Life IS unfair.” Such an answer can seem like an excuse for not addressing the situation. 

But when God seems to ignore injustice, our frustration and hurt can escalate to bitterness and despair.

The writer of Psalms 73 agonized over the prosperity of the wicked, their good health, and success in their evil schemes. 

He saw how their admirers noticed this too and decided God was out to lunch and they could do as they pleased. 

Utterly discouraged, his faith failing, the psalmist asked, “Have I obeyed God in vain? 

Will there be no reward for my sacrifices? 

Is God distant and distracted? 

Where is justice?”

But then he went into the presence of God and understood that though he withheld judgment to give the wicked time to repent, punishment would eventually fall. 

Hope returned and he praised God for remaining faithful to him and loving him despite his flagging faith and despairing anger.

One day, we will see all made right as the wicked are punished and the righteous are rewarded. 

We will look back from the heavenly perspective of eternity and see how God worked in every situation, accomplishing his plans and purposes and remaining faithful and loving through it all.

So along with Moses we can say, “[God] is the Rock; his deeds are perfect. Everything he does is just and fair. He is a faithful God who does no wrong; how just and upright he is!” Deuteronomy 32:4

PRAYER: Almighty God, you are perfect and always fair. Thank you that even now, you are bringing justice to the earth. Amen
