Discipline Demands
Karen Pourbabaee
“For whom the Lord loves, He disciplines; He scourges every son He acknowledges. Endure your trials as discipline.” Hebrews 12: 6-7 NAB
The Word says it.
We should expect it.
God scourges the son or daughter He acknowledges. Ouch!
Discipline is a dreaded word for most of us.
But it will come, so we must be prepared for it. Discipline comes disguised as a gift of love.
Whom the Lord loves, He disciplines.
Couldn’t be clearer than that.
Discipline demands acceptance.
Discipline demands acceptance.
What will you do with the gift of love offered from the Father’s hand?
“Every good thing bestowed and every perfect gift is from above…” (James 1:17).
We are admonished not only to accept it, but with joy!
“Consider it all joy, my brethren, when you encounter various trials.” (James 1:2).
Discipline demands struggle and discomfort. After all, Paul tells us it’s a scourging.
Discipline demands struggle and discomfort. After all, Paul tells us it’s a scourging.
Sound familiar? We must accept discipline/scourging as our Lord did for us in His journey to the cross.
“For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example that you should follow in His footstep.” (1 Peter 2:21)
We must take up our cross and follow Him.
Discipline demands patience.
Discipline demands patience.
Good is coming, therefore we must be patient until it manifests.
“Let us not grow tired of doing good…” (Galatians 6:9)
Wait on the Lord.
Discipline demands endurance.
Discipline demands endurance.
Not just for a day or a week; maybe for a year or more. Endurance requires sustained patience. Galatians 6:9 continues with,
“in due time we shall reap our harvest, if we do not give up.”
Trials and tests are for our good, our instruction, and our sanctification.
Trials and tests are for our good, our instruction, and our sanctification.
Don’t reject the discipline of the Lord, but endure your trials as discipline.
Accept discipline’s demands and reap its harvest of God’s goodness.
