A Posture of Surrender

“I am the Lord’s servant,” Mary answered. “May it be to me as you have said.” Luke 1:38 (NIV) 

Mary was an example of self-surrender; one who displayed a willingness to accept the plans of the Lord. 

Incredulous as Gabriel’s words may have sounded to Mary, she trusted enough in God’s love and wisdom, to place herself in His hands. 

Her simple faith and obedience were the reasons God had chosen this young woman, over others, to become the mother of the coming Messiah. 

What blessing Mary would have forfeited if she had refused to accept and believe that God would fulfill the commission given to her! 

Elizabeth confirmed that her cousin Mary had chosen well when she said, 

“Blessed is she who has believed that what the Lord has said to her will be accomplished!” Luke 1:45 (NIV) 

What wonderful things God can do through fully surrendered, believing hearts! 

When God whispers our name and asks us to do what appears impossible, difficult or overwhelming what is our reaction? 

Can we, like Mary, kneel quietly before our Father, adopt a posture of surrender, open wide our hearts and hands and speak these trusting words, 

“may it be with me Lord, according to your will.” 

Let our response be self-abandonment, believing that the plans He has for us are always to prosper, not harm us, and to give us a hope and a future (See Jeremiah 29:11).

‘Father, help me to remain faithful to what you ask of me. Help me to trust deeply, wait patiently, hold firmly to your promises and live the surrendered life you call me to.’
