How a nervous breakdown brought Michael W. Smith back to Christ
Worship leader Michael W. Smith is a star in the upcoming Christian film titled Beautifully Broken, and he shared his life's most scary moment with the Christian Post. He experienced a near-death experience and Smith had a nervous breakdown. The good thing is that it led him to Christ.
According to Smith, this movie is different from other faith-based films, because of its transparency. “Everybody’s got stuff going on in their lives, every believer, every nonbeliever, I mean you just can’t avoid it,” Smith shared with the Christian Post. “We live in a broken world, and unfortunately that’s my problem a lot with ‘faith-based films’ that seem to be nicely wrapped up in a bow. You don’t get the hard things about what goes on in people’s lives, and that’s what I love about this movie.”
The film stands on a true story of three families from different countries, but all of them are struggling to find hope and safety among the devastation of war. But they all learned an important key: "the healing power of forgiveness and reconciliation.” It was an eyeopener for the families that helping others can change people around them and within them."
Smith also tells about his personal story, describing a nervous breakdown that led him back to Christ from a journey down a road with alcoholism and drugs.
“Then I had this nervous breakdown, beyond, honestly. It was just that God came and He laid down beside me on the floor in my kitchen as I wept and convulsed for three hours, from midnight to 3:00 in the morning. I haven’t been the same since I got up off the floor.”
He shared that during his difficulties, his parents never gave up on him, and were continually praying for him.
Pastor on the screen
In Beautifully Broken, Smith plays a pastor on the screen. The role was not so difficult for him, because he pastored a church for two years. He also acted as a pastor before in The Second Chance.

“I say no to a lot of stuff,” Smith shared. “But when I read this script about how all these three families are intertwined, I just thought, ‘Wow, this is remarkable’ and the fact that it’s true, and the fact that this pastor ended up in my hometown, Nashville, Tennessee, is remarkable.”
