The Blessing of Being Cared For
Ken Ebright
“Thank the LORD because he is good. His love continues forever. Psalm 118:1” (NCV)
The fact that I have never been married can be very lonely at times. It makes it harder when you lose a parent. After my dad died, I realized how much a blessing it is to have a family that cares for me.
When I was fourteen, my dad was hurt deeply by my mom’s suicide. He almost left me with our pastors family to live so he could move out of town. Had he done that, I would have felt even more alone, with no other family close. Thankfully, because the Lord loved me, He intervened just in time, and my dad found a new love named Mary.
When my dad wed Mary, I went from being an only child to gaining two stepsisters and a stepbrother. Years later, there would also be nieces and nephews added to our family.
After my dad passed, one of my nieces reached out and helped me hang in there. She has always been concerned for me since we were young. Another niece is always there too, in prayer and friendship.
It’s possible, I may be single the rest of my life. It is scary to think of what it could have been like if I did not have my close family. Jesus loves me and intervened after my parents died, comforting me directly and through a family that loves me.
I think it is important to not take for granted the blessings the Lord gives us, like our extended family. Reach out and get a heap of blessings from them today.
