The Limitless God
Jennifer Woodley
‘Those who heard it said, “Then who can be saved?” He replied, “What is impossible for mortals is possible for God.”’ Luke 18:26-27 (NRSV)
For those of us with sons or daughters not walking with our Father, this conversation is good news. We are inclined to see our children’s waywardness and grow discouraged. They may be living in an adulterous relationship, be an alcoholic, using drugs, or they may be living the reckless lifestyle of the prodigal son.
Whatever their current condition is, there is another side to this story that we are forgetting. Jesus said plainly to those who wondered how a person could ever be saved,
“What is impossible for mortals is possible for God.”
What a person cannot do for himself or herself, God can. Mortals have limits, God does not.
For every person who has lost their way, God is eager to bring them home; to restore what sin has taken away. Have hope. Keep faith. Pray always. Nothing is impossible for God.
‘Father, hear my prayer today.
There is nothing you cannot do.
Have mercy on those I love, who do not love you.
May their idols be seen for what they are, worthless and soul destroying. Give them a deep desire and love for you. Amen.’
