Mary’s Song
Jennifer Woodley
‘And Mary said: “My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for he has looked with favor on the lowliness of his servant.”’ Luke 1:46-48
Magnify is a powerful word. It means to enlarge and to make greater. Because of God’s great work in Mary’s life, she had chosen to enlarge His presence in her soul. The Lord had become bigger by the very act of giving Him more space, and greater control. God had become the centerpiece, the main attraction and the reason for living. As a result, this young woman could not help but rejoice and sing joyfully of all God’s goodness towards her and for what He was going to do for the world through her.
Jesus said, ‘For out of the overflow of the heart the mouth speaks.’ (Matthew 12:34).
Whatever we ruminate upon in the deep recesses of our heart, comes up in our speech. Today, let’s consider what occupies our thoughts. What do we hold in our hearts that we find ourselves talking about to others repeatedly? For today, if we intentionally listen to our words, we will quickly discover what our heart is mostly concerned about.
Do these preoccupations rob our souls of magnifying the Lord?
Let us choose to fill our heart and mind with the goodness of God, by dwelling deep with Him. We too will then find our soul magnifies the Lord so that our speech overflows with praise regarding His goodness towards us.
‘Father, please show me what robs my soul from magnifying you. Free me from the cares and concerns that hinder me from dwelling deep with you. Thank you.’
