THEY'RE LEGALLY SNOOPING ON PARENTS: CREEPY
Exclusive: Patrice Lewis tells of law enabling State to create dossiers on every family
When our younger child was a 5-month-old baby, I took her to town with me on a sparkling October day. She was attired in nothing but a diaper, so I put her in my trusty sling, draped a jacket across both of us, and we skipped across the parking lot toward the store. We were both laughing in the snappy air and pretty sunshine.
That is, until I stepped into the store. Immediately, I was accosted by an outraged woman. “How dare you take that baby out naked in this weather!” she snarled.
Taken aback, I looked at our daughter. Her eyes were bright, the cotton sling was tucked over her bare shoulders, she was warm against her mommy’s body, and she was laughing out loud. “She’s perfectly warm,” I assured the woman. “She’s laughing and happy. See?”
Not satisfied, the woman proceeded to absolutely lambaste me for my poor mothering skills, for my unthinking cruelty to take a baby out unclothed on such a cold day (it was 60 degrees) and quite literally threatened to call Child Protective Services over the unpardonable sin of not dressing my baby in a down parka for the polar expedition of walking 50 feet across a parking lot in October.
She finally left me alone. I did my shopping, but before I stepped foot outside the store I confess I looked around to see if the harridan was lurking in a corner, waiting to take my license plate number and report me to CPS.
I was nervous because my husband and I were raising our children in what some considered unorthodox ways. We lived on a small farm. We homeschooled. We worked at home, we brought them to church, we taught them morals, we loved them, we disciplined them. In short, we tried our best to raise daughters who would someday become upstanding, productive adults contributing to society. As far as we’re concerned, it worked. They are now young women to be proud of.
But in the eyes of CPS or busybodies like the twit who accosted me, that’s not good enough. If we didn’t do things “their” way, we were wrong.
There are as many ways to parent children as there are parents; and for everything a parent does, there is an “expert” who won’t hesitate to tell us our parenting style will lead to grave but unspecified harm. For every toddler’s mishap, we are told it was avoidable and we were neglectful for “allowing” her to trip. For every time we “failed” to dress a baby in a down parka in autumn, there are busybodies ready to call Child Protective Services for neglect.
For a parent, it can be a frightening maze. For homeschooling parents, it’s even more terrifying (since, of course, we homeschool just to hide the bruises). The state can and does yank children away from loving families merely on anonymous tips, and everything can be interpreted as abuse, neglect, or other excuses to terminate parental rights.
It’s bad enough in America; but for parents in Scotland, it’s becoming an Orwellian nightmare. That’s because Scotland has taken parental monitoring to a disturbing, creepy, invasive level never seen before.
The Children and Young People (Scotland) Act comes into force in August, but currently it’s being tried across the country. This law creates a state guardian (unnervingly termed “Named Person”) for every one of Scotland’s children. Every. Single. Child.
What this law does is to allow legal spying on Scottish citizens, resulting in massive (but secretive) dossiers on every family. The article notes, “There is no right of appeal against their findings – indeed, no automatic right to know what those findings are – and no way to prevent their judgments spreading out into the state bureaucracy via a soon-to-be-created mass database.”
This law drags people into its clutches who have no interest in being used as spies – teachers and doctors, of course, but also bus drivers, cabbies and dentists … many of whom legitimately object to ratting on their clients.
It also raises the most logical question of all: Why is your way of parenting RIGHT and my way of parenting WRONG? Why do I need to raise MY children according to YOUR standards?
Ironically, many Named Persons are childless and are therefore (cough) the most qualified experts.
I happen to dislike country music because I am a classical Baroque music fiend. Does this mean a country music-loving “Named Person” can make notes in my file that I have raised my children without sufficiently “diverse” exposure to country music?
You may dismiss this as an irrational bit of paranoia, but parents in Scotland aren’t laughing. They’re probably wondering whether the type of music they listen to could now be construed as “abuse” because it disagrees with what a Named Person believes a child “should” experience.
This is confirmed from the article: “Named Persons are already exhibiting a disturbing zealotry in their pursuit of ‘failing parents.’ … Named Persons will be able to inquire into how children’s bedrooms are decorated. They will also assess how much television youngsters watch and whether they can ride a bicycle at a certain age.”
I can think of no finer way to kill families than a “Named Person” with an agenda. Hate conservatives? Christians? Homeschoolers? No problem – just become a “Named Person” and you, too, can have a fulfilling career of ripping children away from loving parents!
“The Named Person scheme shows how government has lost any sense of the family as an important private institution,” says Stuart Waiton, a lecturer at Abertay University and vocal opponent of the scheme. “Trust, loyalty and privacy, in their warped eyes, are transformed into secrets being hidden ‘behind closed doors.'”
In short, the family is no longer sacrosanct. It seems like the Scottish government just wishes all parents would turn over their infants at birth to be raised “properly” by the State.
And please, spare me the ol’ “I have nothing to hide” argument. This law implies you are guilty merely for reproducing. If you have children, you are doing something wrong, and the State will know about it.
This act’s chief proponent is Nicola Sturgeon, the First Minister of Scotland. And guess what? She has no children. Why doesn’t this surprise me?
I guess the best parents are those without kids.
