A 25-year-old knife-wielding man described as a Frenchman of Moroccan origin who stabbed to death a French policeman in front of the officer’s Paris-area suburban home, and who was then shot and killed by authorities, is affiliated with ISIS, the terror group bragged on its news website.
The attacker, identified as Larossi Abballa, also killed a woman inside the home who was identified by some media outlets as the police commander’s wife, and by others as his female companion. Reuters specified she was also a police officer.
Meanwhile, a three-year-old boy, intially held hostage by Abballa after he stormed the home. was rescued by responding authorities, who described him as “shocked but unharmed,” the Associated Press reported.
Abballa reportedly filmed part of his attack and posted clips to Facebook, according to journalist David Thomson, who specializes in coverage of radical Islamists. The Facebook post from Abballa included mention of the Euro 2016 soccer tournament that’s currently in process, along with this dark message, Thomson told Reuters: “The Euros will be a graveyard.”
The Telegraph reported Abballa shouted “Allahu Akhbar,” or “God is great,” at the scene.
That news outlet wrote: “Some sources described the attacker as a neighbor of the policeman, who was in plain clothes when he was killed. Witnesses heard the assailant, described as a teenager or in his early 20s, shout ‘Allahu Akhbar,’ Arabic for ‘God is great.’ Counter-terrorism prosecutors were placed in charge of the investigation.”
The 42-year-old police commander, not yet named in media reports, lived in Magnanville, 35 miles or so west of Paris. He was stabbed in the stomach just outside his home. Abballa then ran inside, where he held hostage the woman and boy for a short time, Reuters reported. Police stormed the home and found the woman dead; Abballa was killed during a confrontation with police, AP reported.
“The toll is a heavy one,” said Pierre-Henry Brandet, the interior minister spokesman, in the AP report. “This commander, this police officer was killed by the individual … [and] we discovered the body of a woman. The assailant, the criminal, was killed. Thankfully, a little boy was saved.”
Reuters specified Abballa was shot by police after they tried to negotiate his surrender, but failed.
Shortly after the killings were made public, a news site used by ISIS took responsibility for the incident.
“Source to Amaq agency: Islamic State fighter kills deputy chief of the police station in the city of Les Mureaux and his wife,” Amaq news agency reported on its site.
And Albayan Radio blasted this message, reportedly from an ISIS terrorist: “God has enabled one of the caliphate’s soldiers kin city of Les Mureaux near Paris to stab to death the deputy police chief and his wife.”
It’s not yet been independently confirmed ISIS was behind the murders, Reuters reported.
Abballa was jailed in 2013 for assisting Islamist jihadists in their journey to Pakistan, Reuters reported. He’s since been under secret surveillance by government intelligence officials – surveillance that, at the time of the attack, included wiretaps.
President Francois Hollande is due to hold an emergency meeting to determine the nature of the killings. As Reuters reported: “If it is confirmed Islamic State was behind the murders, it would be the first militant strike on French soil since the government imposed a state of emergency after the multiple attacks on Paris in November that killed 130 people.”
But government officials are already marking the incident as an act of terrorism.
“An abject act of terrorism was carried out yesterdayin Magnanville,” Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve said during a press conference in Les Mureaux, where the police commander worked.
And Hollande announced, Reuters reported: “[The killings are] undeniably a terrorist act,” and the terror threat in France was extremely high.
